I actually was dreaming of a land where everything is fried chicken. Like...it grows on trees, which are made of fried chicken, and the sea is filled with fried fish. GLORIOUS.
How do you feel about the large usage of virtual computers in the corporate/school environment?

Virtual computers? As in emulating a computer hardware architecture on another computer, like VMware and such?
I wasn't aware it was "largely" used in either environment. I don't have much experience with it outside of DOSBox, so I don't have much of an opinion on it now.

I'm told it's the latest thing, simply because it's cost effective. I'm uncertain as to whether it's VMware or another program, but it uses a small networked box which links into a server where your username and password have a virtual Windows machine. The box itself has no hardware, and I think no OS. It's gotta be connected to the server...I'm not describing it very well.ArchAngel wrote:Virtual computers? Northwest (a local comcol) has pretty much switched everything over to it, and I was told by the teachers/networkers that a lot of schools were doing the same.
Boogers?

Interesting. Well, the box needs some hardware, but it's essentially a streamlined RDP session.
I wouldn't like that personally, but it does make some sense in a corporate environment. I'd be interested to know more about it.

Like the tall black kid in a basketball game, I'd pick 'em.Chozon1 wrote:Boogers?

You mean dumb terminals, Chozon1. Though these days they have some other name for it.
The most (famous? common?) one at present is Citrix though there are several implementations I believe. Basically, you work from a box that contains a network card and the typical keyboard/mouse/monitor ports. All data is stored on the server and calculations are performed in a virtual machine in said server (it's a little more complicated than that but mostly beyond my knowledge).
That's different from VMWare which is typically used to virtualize servers. For bonus points you can use VMWare to virtualize your Citrix servers in order to properly induct your staff's virtual machines into the matrix.
So how about that new ISS crew? Pretty good start I think.

Ha! Totally forgot about that.delve wrote:You mean dumb terminals, Chozon1.
Yeah, definitely. Karen Nyberg is a crafter, who brought sewing material with her, so my wife is excited to see how she picks up Hadfield's mantle.delve wrote:So how about that new ISS crew? Pretty good start I think.
I have not. I'm going between the UDK and Unity engine on what I want to play with, but I'm leaning towards Unity.baconisgood23 wrote:Ever used Unreal Engine before?

When I hear "dumb terminals" I always get the image of old green screen monitors attached to keyboards. It's the same thing though, I 'spose. I'm fairly certain you're correct about the Citrix stuff, though the particular box I used was Dell...By no hardware I meant "no in built HDD, RAM or disc drive"...those few extra words would've made that sentence make sense. XD It may have had some sort of RAM though...I do not know. Seems like it would need something.
From my usage, it wasn't that bad. Each terminal was allotted a certain amount of RAM and HDD space, and though it could be a bit stodgy at times (especially since one of the courses required us to do virtual labs. So it was a virtual lab inside a virtual machine), but for word processing, internet searching and light programming, it worked stellar.
Net Navi's?
