Seems like a pretty good build. I built my own computer for about that much, so it seems solid to me.

Depending on your major and budget, I generally support laptops. Get a good quality one if at all possible, as it's nice to be able to do assignments wherever you want. Desktops are only worth it if you're on a super-tight budget or if you need super power for work. (Like graphic design, architecture, etc.)
