So... I'm thinking of getting a fixed blade knife for carry around (probably not public carry, more around the land/in the truck). Just curious about what you like. I'm thinking a 3"-6" blade, something around there. Any suggestions for around $100 (or less of course)?

Also... know of any knives like what I'm looking for with sheaths that can be mounted vertically on a belt (above mah butt, vertically)? Either that or sheaths of that sort.

Umm...you mean horizontally?

Look at the ESEE 3 or 4

Around $80 for the 3, built like a tank, unbeatable warranty.

Ah, well, you'd need an attachment to carry it that way.

Another option is a Kellam Puuko with a custom sheath, which would be a $75~ knife and, if you look around, $25 or so for a sheath.

Also, IRC so we can do this more efficiently.

EDIT: Checked on a couple things. If you can splurge another $7 past you budget, and are will to settle for a rather small blade, I found a couple semi-customs. If not...welcome to the club.

In addition, there's the Benchmade Nim Cub. You'd hate the sheath.

I'm not finding these blades on Amazon... what's the best site you've found for getting knives?

Also, I typed in ESEE on amazon and got this:

http://www.amazon.com/Ontario-Carbon-Ca ... _rhf_p_t_1

EDIT: after further research, I found the RAT is actually by ESEE. And I also found this site, which I seem to recall you recommending(?):

Well, the Ontario RAT's are entirely different. The RAT that later became ESEE split from Ontario due to the subpar heat treat they were using.

I...can't remember using that shop. Best prices I've found on ESEE's and most Benchmade's is here.

So... opinion of this?

http://www.knifeworks.com/eseemodel4cpd ... nedge.aspx

You said the ESEE 3 or 4. That one looks to be pretty awesome to me. Only thing I'm not sure about is the sheath. Do those things have a decent sheath or are they crap?

Also, are the 3 and 4 identical save for the blade length? That's the only difference I've found.

The sheaths are Kydex. It's a really tough, weather resistant polymer. I'd go so far as to call it industry standard. Personally...I don't mind it. It's a heckuva lot better than nylon. That said, even though it's tough and called a polymer...it's still plastic, and has that plastic feel to it, or, at least, my Barkie necker's sheath does. It does come...kinda capable of being mounted on the back of a belt like you requested. But, it's really awkward to snap on and off, so you'd probably be better off picking of a Tek Lok in the long term. FWIW, I've never heard of anyone breaking a Kydex sheath.

Yes, they're identical apart from blade length, unless you get the ESEE 3 Mil, which has a sharpened butt they call a "glass breaker". Where I come from, that's called a skull crusher, but whatever.

Also, that exact model is a clip point, so the tip is thinner than the standard version, which seems to be out of stock. I like the tip's thicker, but a good number of people, even in the hardcore bushcraft crowd, like thin tips for fine work like drilling. YMMV.

Just keep in mind, it's made out of 1095 carbon. It's not at all rust proof, but it holds a good edge. The finish they put on it keeps the bulk of the rust away. Speaking of the finish, it'll wear smooth after enough hard work, but it won't wear off short of sandpaper or paint thinner. Just so you don't start worrying after using it.
