About only the cost of the food. I do have to buy the occasional light bulb, but they last a good long while. It's more of a one time, starting off investment (cage, heat mat, etc.). But that stuff lasts for ages, and isn't yearly (a heat mat will last several years, a cage lasts forever... unless of course the rep outgrows it or it breaks somehow).

So yeah. The cost of the food is basically it with the added cost of a light bulb occasionally (I only use them on my big boa's cage atm, the others need only their heat mats).


So. I've pretty much decided on a Spyderco for my next blade. I just really want to try them out.

Suggestions for the $60-ish dollar range?

In the $60 range, you have the Delica, Endura (aka the big Delica), Centofante (gentleman's knife) and Native.

There are also "Salt" versions of most of the above. The steel ain't as hard on them though, so unless you plan on getting pretty wet, stick with the normal ones.

Another thing to consider, now that I think of it, is getting a Tasman Salt. I know you said you prefer plain edge, but since you already have the Vulcan, it'd be a great counterpart. There is, quite plainly, nothing on earth that tears through cardboard like a serrated hawkbill.

You also have the Cricket. Doubt you'd like it, and it looks like a pain to sharpen.

Most are FRN handled lockbacks. Which I know you weren't too hot on XD

Personally, if you're looking to avoid lockbacks, look into the Manix. It's $20 more on average, but my opinion adds about $50 in features. The caged ball lock would be similar in use to the lock on your SOG, but the general opinion is since it uses a stronger spring, it doesn't disengage quite as easily. But, you do get a stronger lock, so YMMV. G10 also feels a lot better in the hand. It's...kinda like sandpaper, but it a good way.



Anyway. Off the first list of $60 knives, all but the Native are VG10, and the Native is S30V. Having used both steels, I've found S30V looses shaving sharpness faster, but retains a working edge longer. Both rock.

FRN isn't bad stuff. It does feel a little plasticy, but I think the same of the Zytel the Vulcan uses. Feeling aside, I'd dropped my Delica from a rooftop onto rocks without it suffering any damage.

Out of all of them, if I were buying for myself I'd get the Endura. Sister's getting a Blue FFG Delica for her birthday.

Hmm... I'm leaning towards either the Endura or Native. So the Endura is pretty much of the same quality as the Delica, just bigger? I like that... like that a lot.

Then again, I've really been wanting a S30V blade for a while now just to try it out and see if I like them. Thus the Native really appeals to me.

Also, how are those two blades in terms of smoothness when opening? I find a lot of those lock-backs really, really stiff... thus my dislike for them.

Any preference out of those two?

Honestly...S30V is good stuff. You'll get no objection from me on that part.

It's been a while since I've had my hands on a Native, but iirc correctly it is smooth. Assuming the Endura is like the Delica, it will be the same.

Out of the two, I'd still go with the Endura, like I said earlier.

I'm picky enough that I hone my PPT if it's even slightly dull, so the longer working edge time of S30V is wasted. Secondly, the swedged spear point of the Native can be a tad more intimidating to sheeple, and since I'm routinely using a knife around others, that's an issue.

Now, it's not all bad. Like a said, S30V is great for a working knife. Not to mention the deep choil is awesome imo.

Next blade(s) you're gonna get?

Be ordering either a Spyderco Delica 4 FFG Blue or an orange Benchmade Mini-Griptilian for my sister tonight.

After that, possibly an Endura Wave to keep in the car. Might decide to be generous and get everyone in my squad in Lit class a Spyderco Ladybug though. Also wanting Manix's, Military's, and Persian's.

Or...I could just buy myself another $10 Opinel.
