Let me revise that statement. I've started Thinner and Misery. Wasn't inclined to finish either.

The accusation that many horror writers do not employ psychological scares but are only interested in gruesome spectacles is a valid one, but cannot be rightfully leveled at Stephen King.

Haven't read Martin. Want to, but my book budget spent up til next spring.

Perhaps so...but from what I've read, he's no Lovecraft, Poe, or even Stoker, for that matter. Will he, in the course of history be put in the same esteem as any of the above? Probably. But then again, people will probably follow the modern trend of thinking people like Rowling and Meyers are on the level of Tolkien. Heck, I've been told they're better than the Epic of Gilgamesh.

For what it's worth though, I'm certain open to suggestions, if you've got any.
