So DMR, what is your motivation for wanting Sega to make a console? This is irregardless of whether Sega is actually going to make one.

Like, what do you feel Sega will gain by making a console, that they normally wouldn't have by being 3rd party?

When you think about it, people are always drawing pictures or Photoshop-ing homemade concepts of a SEGA console- more than we realize. We can't deny it. SEGA has something that the game industry needs to get a hold of. When SEGA released the Dreamcast, it hit a chord that no other company during that time (or even now) could ever hit before. SEGA's games were quirky and had a lot of personality (which is probably the reason why SEGA and Nintendo were rivals in the industry, especially with Mario and Sonic), and also did things that were uncanny. Like Jet Set Radio. The music was fresh (I'm completely ignoring that some of it had foul language in it), the gameplay was interesting, it had a very punk-ish feel. It had energy. It was very catchy, not just in sound but in visuals, story, characters.....everything.

It's games like this that are lacking in the game industry now, and games that are just like this are either extremely underrated or completely ignored (i.e. Battle Fantasia; Fun Fact: it was made by the same people who made Guilty Gear (Arc System Works) and actually came out right before BlazBlue was released, and can be downloadbale on PSN and XBLA. Not sure about PC).


This is probably why a SEGA console is, if it is really real, a good thing. People have been wanting SEGA to get back in the game for years. It would blow everybody's minds if they did. And if they play their cards right, then the game industry might last a little longer.

Now, let's get something straight here:

I am not a SEGA fan. I'm not a Nintendo fan. I'm not a fan of any game developer or hardware developer. I am merely a guy who likes video games. If it looks interesting to me, I'll try it. If I want it, I keep it. If get tired of it, then I sell it or trade it in for in-store credit at GameStop. Of course, there are games I regret giving away (The Bouncer (PS2) ). As one who plays video games and as someone who wants to be an independent game developer, I see things (both in life and in my head) that nobody else sees in the video game industry and in video games.

But this is just how I look at it.

So do you feel Sega has lost its touch since it went 3rd party? I'm asking because what you described of Sega, could be done with them now-- console or no console. So why would a console change things for the way Sega currently makes games?

I don't think that SEGA has lost their touch. I think it's just that they have been readjusting to being a third-party publisher. They have made mistakes, yes. But that doesn't mean that they've lost their touch. NOT AT ALL.


Now as to why a console would change things, the answer is simple: because it's SEGA. For most people (and especially the fans), that really is the only reason why people would buy the thing. And like I said, if they play their cards right then things could go really well for them.


Now this is just an opinion, but I think SEGA is most likely "poking" the fans. Also, chances are that SEGA had planned on making an announcement at E3 (which probably explains the image) but Nintendo called them out of the blue and asked for a three-game partnership (which probably explains the reason nothing was announced). They may be waiting a bit longer or taking time to re-examine the console. What's more, people keep saying "If SEGA is making a console then why haven't they announced anything?" Remember how they announced the Dreamcast? Loud, and then even louder. The announcement was loud enough to make people want to buy the console. And they made it a big deal, too. It was on roll for a while...........then the PS2 was announced by Sony.

When you think about it, if SEGA really was (or is) making a console would you want them to make that same mistake again? Like I said, it's just an opinion.

Ahh, ok. I just think that alot of the benefits from Sega making a console (quirky and interesting games), Sega can do now with their 3rd party status. For instance, I feel Sega has gotten Sonic back on track and gained some of the popularity back from the Dreamcast days. I also feel with re-releasing some of their games, like Nights and Sonic Adventure 2, Sega is realizing that people still enjoy their stuff from the past.

What I want to see them do now, is bring back old franchises. Like a new Crazy Taxi game would be cool and most importantly, a follow up to Ecco: Defender of the Future. They could really make you feel immersed in the under sea, with next gen graphics and improved controls... like I felt when I first played DOTF on the Dreamcast. And if they did make a new console, those would be great flagship games.

What I really like is game hardware-- the power and design of it all. Which you would get if Sega made a new console. But even then, I think that can be achieved if Sega would start making 3rd party controllers. I would love to see Sega's answer to the Wii U and PS4 controllers with their signature style. Kind of like how MadCatz develops 3rd party accessories. Since, Sega was a big innovator of controller designs-- for instance, I think its safe to say that the Genesis controller got console developers to break out of the geometric mold that all of the controllers at the time and before were using. And the Dreamcast controller was an obvious inspiration to me for the Xbox controller designs.

So I see. But you gotta admit, a new SEGA console (if they play their cards right) would be amazing.

Well, anyway. If SEGA is making a new console in the utmost secrecy, hopefully it will blow everybody away.

Although it's not about a console, Sega has purchased Atlus Holdings for almost $150 million. So if Sega has that kind of money to throw around, things are probably going pretty well with their finances.

I would agree with you. Even though they have closed a few of their offices around the world (Australia was the latest one, I believe) they also keep reporting profits for their various ventures, too. If I recall correctly their income has been lower than they had anticipated, but unlike many other game companies out there, they actually are reporting a profit. I don't know how much debt they might have on the books, but they seem to be on pretty stable financial footing right now.

Maybe not enough to warrant the development of a new console, but you never know....
