Nice try. But the answer is a baby. It crawls on four legs, yes. But if you cut off two limbs it can only drag itself around with two, and if you give it a crutch it can hobble around on three.

Tolkien...because every self-proclaimed lover of fantasy has to say that.
And also Kathy Tyers, Bryan Davis, Tim Downs, and James Byron Huggins. Mix in some Rudyard Kipling for spice, and a little Charlotte Bront for the finishing touch.
Though the last two are specific works in particular, and mayhaps should not be listed.
