What can I say? Wow. Best movie of 2008.
A+
I'm gonna go out here and disagree with both you and Riley, here. Just to be confrontational.
The reason it won't make my number one? It didn't make me think. It was a beautiful story, beautifully directed, beautifully shot, and beautifully acted in a beautiful movie. But...it didn't make me think. I just enjoyed.
So Doubt still holds number 1 for me...so far.
...dangit. Now you've made me question myself. XD
It's a tough decision for me, to be honest. Doubt... affected me in a way that a movie hadn't in a long time. But... Slumdog... was such a colossal undertaking, and yet they made it so excellent. So. Yeah. Is difficult. XD

Basic Instinct
This was the second time I had watched it, and I really disliked it this time. The plot is boring until the second half, where it gets overstuffed with twists and complications and practically collapses under its own weight. That, and it's practically a porno with some A-list talent. Although, the "talent" part of "A-list talent" is questionable.

Note that it comes down to a matter of personal preference. I believe that the best movies are the ones that you make you stop, think, and really consider the important questions. Slumdog Millionaire is worthy of a Best of 2008 spot. It simply wouldn't make mine, since it's a movie that isn't going to stay with me anywhere near as long as Doubt will. Slumdog was a feel-good film. Doubt was an exploration of two world views.

I wouldn't call it a "feel-good" film. It explored love, and the way it wove its way through a young man's life, in a very palpable way. And for me, personally, it was awesome to see a movie that had some of the elements that make my favorite films, while staying away from being gritty.

Dude. It was so definitely a feel-good film.

Really? It was? Because I wouldn't call a movie with torture and knife violence in it "feel-good." Nor would I call a movie "feel-good" when it features riots and horrible things happening to people everywhere.

That's, um... that's a pretty good point. >.>
Also... I just saw
Taken.
It was an immensely fun movie, and very suspenseful. Of course, it doesn't compete with most of the movies I've seen lately, but it was definitely an excellent thriller. It's no Bourne, but it was great for the type of movie that it was.

I missed this.
Horrible things can happen to people in feel-good films. This was done simply on a larger, far more intense, mature scale. Look at the characters. The hero is absolutely pure, innocent, represented as sinless. He's everything that's good and holy. The villains in this story are stereotypically evil and conflict perfectly with our perfect hero. They blind children and care only for money. As for the way that the story itself unfolds...classic fairy tale. And everything turns out perfectly in the end.
In my opinion, Slumdog Millionaire was a feel-good crowd pleaser.

You want to see a "feel-good" movie by Danny Boyle? Check out Millions.
Anyway...
I just finished up The Godfather, Part 2.
And I was blown away.

I just saw the last half hour of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. And I really want to see this film again.

Even though it's full of historical innaccuracies and misguided portrayals of criminals as heroes???????

Silly Laz. Don't you know that everything put into movies is true?
