Well said. Gone are the days when computer programming was relatively simple, and building a calculator out of a bag of transistors was a necessary skill in a developer.

So what's it cost to get a license for Visual Studio these days, per machine?

It's free for Express and Express does most all you need.

I used it once a couple years ago to create an on the fly portfolio during a job interview.

What about the full version?

Don't know off the top of my head, and don't really care too much. Companies usually front that cost.

If the free version is that great, why would companies bother buying the licensed version of Visual Studio?

Are you trying to get me to say "features"?

Yes.

Joking aside, I'm curious... What features would make the license fee worthwhile? When I used the free version it seemed to have all the important stuff.

Honestly, the same for me. Some of the stuff, like crystal reports, are meaningless to me. I'm pretty sure you can attach to processes in express, so that ones pretty big, if not. I saw some things on database interface, but I don't care as much for that. I can work on a db just fine using management studio.

I would imagine integrated SourceSafe would be a part of that, too.

How do you like SQLServer?

Team Foundation Server, I think is the one now. But I wouldn't bother with that. Mercurial for me!

I do like SQL Server. The limitations for Express (4g max on db, for one, along with some management tools) are a bit more constricting that for Visual Studio, and yes, MySQL is very free... I just found working with SQL Server a bit more cohesive and put together (in my personal opinion).

The thing I want to explore next is object oriented databases, like db4o.
