Yeah. Also, JOJ. I sent you some custom stages on SSBB. Check them out when you can.

I thought Sonic 06 was terrible. The game was horribly glitchy....I could rarely finish a level. And don't worry, I love the gameplay of the 3D sonic games before and after it (especially Generations and Adventure 1). And I really got my hopes up for it...then I saw the 5 out of 10's on the review sites and I was shocked. However, once I played it, I started to agree with the critics.
The worst part I think with Sonic 06, is that I feel that alot of game reviewers have never truly let Sonic live it down...I've read too many reviews where the critic will bring up all of Sonic's failures in the introduction paragraph...what other video game character gets that? And I've seen alot of reviewers retroactively act as if every 3D Sonic game never "worked", even though all 3 of his games before (SA1, SA2 and Heroes) got positive reviews. Even some 9/10's for SA1. And if you've ever seen the wonderful "sonic cycle" that some people like to pull out everytime a sonic game is announced? The only game it can apply to is Sonic 06. None of the games before it, or after it.
I think Unleashed got the most undeserved grief because of Sonic 06. Did Unleashed have a really slow Werehog (who I didn't mind too much)? yes. Were some of the plane missions really annoying? Yes. But the game is not glitchy. You just have to play some areas of the game that can be very un-fun. Its not broken, Sonic 06 is.
However, IGN disagrees (for whatever IGN's opinion is worth they're still a major review site). Sonic Unleashed got a 4.5 out of 10. IGN gave Sonic 06 a 4.8, a score higher than Sonic Unleashed.
For gameplay, IGN gave Unleashed a 5, and Sonic 06 a 4. Unleashed got a point higher, which is not saying much. This is what they said about 06's gameplay "A mixture of camera and control problems, not to mention lackluster missions and faulty level design, detonate all the fun.". For Unleashed they said this: "The daytime levels aren't without fault, but are a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the rest of the game is horrendous." So half of Unleashed's levels are FUN?? How is that only a point better than an ENTIRE game with camera, control problems and faulty level design?? And if you watch their review of Unleashed, they say that the daytime stages are fun and the rest is just tedious and boring-- in other words, not "horrendous".
For graphics, Sonic 06 got a 6.5, the same as Unleashed. Here's what they said about 06's gfx: "Decent character animation and textures, but the enviornments could benefit from more attention." versus Unleashed's "Graphics
The daytime levels look great, but the other two-thirds suffer considerable framerate issues.". So some frame rate issues in some portions of one game automatically equal lack of artistry in another??
Now I do realize that the reviewers are different people. But this is a perfect example of how a good game can get a bad score, because of its terrible predecessor. A site like this should have standards. You need consistency. Especially if you read these reviews to decide on what you should buy.
Sonic 3D Blast wasn't as bad. It wasn't glitchy (I've beat the game myself). I just found the gameplay style un-Sonic like. I'm mostly comparing it to every other "main" Sonic game. If it wasn't supposed to be Sonic's flagship game for the Saturn I wouldn't have cared so much. For instance, its gameplay is heavily based on Sonic Labyrinth, for the Game Gear. But if you're looking at all of the main Sonic games (1,2,CD,3,SA1,SA2,Heroes,06,Unleashed,Colors,Gen) its 3D Blast and 06 that are weakest, It also felt like a cop-out because Sonic X-Treme was cancelled (which would've been a flagship Saturn title). So it seemed like Sega had to act quick and out-source the game to Traveler's Tales. I have nothing wrong with Traveler's Tales as a company, it just felt cheap that Sega couldn't make the game themselves. However, 3D Blast did have great music!
Essentially, 3D Blast was definitely a low point for Sonic at that time and its a perfect example as to why we needed Sonic Adventure 1, badly.

NateDaZombie, LAVA keeps bringing up critic comments on recent Sonic games.
Will you kindly show him your signature?

I wish to defend the new (videogames as a medium); however, even I have to point out that Sonic has had some pretty awful games (Unleashed, Black Knight, and arguably Secret Rings).

Don't have to be considered a critic to realize that Sonic games have major faults.
I, personally, dislike the voice acting so much that I tend to mute the TV or skip a cutscene when watching one. I always have subtitles on.
That doesn't mean the games are horrible, they're just not Game of the Year worthy.

Sonic's games are not perfect by any means (pretty much what I was driving home with my first post in this thread).
I just think Unleashed wasn't as bad as Sonic 06. And giving it a score lower than Sonic 06 was insulting to me as a reader. The faults IGN described with Unleashed should've given it a 7, at the least.
I don't care how many "bad" games a series has, each game should be judged on its own merits. and we don't need to go through the whole "Sonic has fallen on bad times" spiel in the intro when someone reviews one of his games.
EDIT: But in the end, I was trying to show how much of an impact Sonic 06 had on the rest of the series. Something that Sonic is only now living down.

I absolutely agree, especially now that we have Sonic Colors and Generations.

I see your point. But honestly, I think people have a one-track mind when it comes to modern Sonic games. Think about how hard it is for Sega to give new perspectives on Sonic and at the same time try to keep the same quality. I have Sonic '06, Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic Unleashed (PS2 and PS3), Sonic Colors, Sonic Heroes, Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing, Sonic Riders, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity and Sonic Generations. ALL OF THEM HAVE FLAWS. SO DOES EVERY OTHER GAME IN EXISTENCE. I'm not saying this because I'm a fan (because just because I like Sonic does not make me a fan. I've been with Sonic games since I was a kid.) My little brother also likes Sonic, so that is another reason I have these games.
I am disappointed by the flaws, but I choose to look past them. Something a lot of people don't do. I look at the bright side of games. People are one-track minded too often nowadays, man. It's stupid.
Now, NateDaZombie.
I understand what you're saying. But please show LAVA you're signature.

DeadManReedeemed, I'm not sure who you're responding to. You asked if I thought 3D Blast or Sonic 06 were bad, and I explained why. I've also tried to communicate that I do like modern Sonic games.
For sure, NateDaZombie.
By the way....does anyone by chance have Sonic Generations on the PC? It has some cool mods.
(please keep in mind that I don't know what is being said on the actual thread, so I'm just responsible for the first post of these threads)
First Unleashed level in Generations
Playing Classic Sonic in Modern levels and vice versa

Yeah I already read it. The quote is from Ratatouille I believe?
I have no problem with critics reviewing games. Its only when I detect *severe* bias, like the Unleashed review. Its also why I've been going to websites like Rotten Tomatoes lately (for movies at least), because I get more of a general consensus of what they think. I still take what they have to say with a grain of salt, but if its a movie that's like in the 30% range, and I didn't have a strong interest in seeing it, I know to stay away. If its at least fresh, I'll watch it and decide on my own what I think it deserves.

EXAC-KA-TACKILY.
And yes, I know I what I meant when I said what I said, LAVA. But sometimes, it irritates me when people are not happy with what they got. And as for Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the Black Knight, and Sonic '06:
You gotta admit, they did try to do something extraordinary.
