Actually what we now know as "damascus steel" is really just pattern welded and acid etched to give the wave-like appearance.

The technique to make true damascene steel has been lost to us.

Are you sure about that? I knew of the cheap patterned stuff, but I think I've seen real Damascus before in new products. Heavy, at any rate.

If it was real Damascus it was an antique.
