Hey yo all,
long time metal fan reporting in. Since I come from Finland, I guess it's somewhat in my veins.
I've always had a tendency for heavy-heartedness and melancholy, to which I've found metal music suiting. I don't think the music brings me down, but instead helps me deal with feelings that would exist regardless.
I do sometimes question the lyrics in context of my faith. Most of the time I try to adapt the content that challenges me intellectually, helps me deal with my own thoughts, or just gives me a nice (usually an adrenaline rush induced) feeling. Sometimes however I think it goes way too far, for example I had mixed feelings about a black metal band I tend to like (Mustan Kuun Lapset, Children of the Dark Moon in Finnish) that had a song where lyrics described killing an infant. Like, I understand artistic freedom and intention of breaking boundaries, and that this does happen in the world, but I do not really see the overall point. An another issue is that I've noticed that sadly some bands either actively endorse or passive accept national socialism. Some bands that I really wanted to like have been associated with some shady movements, and made me clear steer of them even if the case is not clear.
Growing up I was a 'goth', partly inside partly on the outward appearance. I think in early 2000's my favorite band was Type O Negative - to the extent that even my blood type is 0-

. However, maturing since then has teached me on how to let music control my moods, thoughts and opinions - it's quite dependent on if you control the substances you consume, or the substances control you. It is sad to hear music-associated horrible acts, like school shooting videos with KMFDM music, which used to be one of my favorite bands. I think it's hypocricy to completely try ignore the association with the music and the themes with the acts, but it is most likely more of a symptom than a cause in my opinion. Nowadays I personally prefer high quality curiosities, like the band Carach Angren: strange symphonic black metal band, with good music and often depthful stories/lyrics that span entire albums. Oh, and really good live performances.
Anyhow, I thought I'd pitch in a few album/song suggestions of bands that you might not of heard of, but that I've found enjoyable:
