You are forced to spend money on a Microsoft HDD if you want to upgrade. For Sony, you can buy any laptop HDD on Newegg.
Microsoft has shut down XBL on the original Xbox so people would be forced to purchase an Xbox 360. Sony, on the other hand, still has Socom 2 servers running on the PS2, and for many other games as well.
Their advertising is deceiving (though, Sony is guilty of that as well).
Games for Windows Live. Everything about it.

Here's the thing, I don't hate Microsoft. Though, If you follow their business practices, you'd know that the $ is deserving in many cases. It's not just a gaming thing either.

Sony, on the other hand, it's kind of hard to. What with PS+, all the free games that they've given away recently, and the amount of exclusives they have published this generation. Not to mention they publish games that try to innovate, and they've published a ton of new IPs in the process. I can only find maybe a few things that have made me frown upon Sony. Their console is pretty open in some cases as well, though I wish they didn't remove the install OS feature. That was stupid.

That's where my disdain for Microsoft steps in. I loathe the company's monopolistic business practices, especially with Windows dominating the industry like it has. It's another reason why I keep rooting for other operating systems - the Mac OS and Linux - chipping into their market share. I'd love to see the day when someone can order a computer - such as a Dell or HP - and have an option to choose which operating system to install, instead of being restricted to Windows as the only factory default.

But I didn't know about several of those on your list, Krytae. More fuel for the fire!

I mostly meant relative to Sony. Sony was the one considering the whole "restricting a purchased game to one console" thing

Are you talking about the lack of backwards compatibility for the PS4? Because yeah, I agree, that is a fail on their part. I would like to transfer all of my games to the PS4. I wish they didn't push cell processing so much on the PS3. Huge mistake on their part. Though, hopefully there will be PS2 backwards compatibility at least.

I agree. I always root for Linux to grow up and be the biggest boy on the block. With Steam recently being ported over to Linux, it gives me hope for the future.

Windows wouldn't be number one if it wasn't so compatible with pretty much everything (excluding Windows 8, of course). Not to mention DirectX being great(even though OpenGL has shown to be better). They do a lot of things right.

It's like saying we should like ₤A because of how big they are. We all know they're super greedy, though.

Not sure about the Linux thing, since it's free.

Because for something to be THAT successful, to be the biggest boy on the block, to go up against Apple and MS and come out on top... it's going to need to change somehow. You love it now the way it is because it's free and you can do whatever you want with it. How much would you be willing to see it change to be the most competitive OS on the market? Because I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be free if it needs the resources to compete with Apple and MS. It's going to need to do what's necessary to maintain that level of market dominance, and those things aren't very nice.

Yes. But M$ is still greedy, so that's why people add the $, and that's also why people dislike them. There are a lot of big companies that aren't greedy, and even if they are, there is a good chance that they're not at the same level of EA and Microsoft.

I understand what you're saying, though. I'm not disagreeing with you. If a company becomes greedy, that's usually when people start jumping ship, and eventually that brand will come crashing down. Sometimes it happens when the company is at it's peak, or it's what brought the company to it's peak. It's happened many times before.

I wouldn't be surprised if in the future, Valve will be labeled as the new EA.

Uh...Soup...not to be that guy, but have you ever actually used a Linux distro? It wouldn't need to change half as much as your post implies.

In fact, I'd go as far as to say it just needs some more advertising and a divestation of the "for nerds only" air that it is coated with. It's compatible with every piece of hardware I've tested it with (including multiple dead PC's, a printer, a few cameras and some busted HDD's), and generally has a piece of free software that's nearly equal to most stuff you'd purchase. In addition, it runs on ancient compy's like new, the GUI is simpler than dirt (simpler, even, than Windows), and very flashy. I would place money that if you changed the icons and color scheme, it would pass easily for a MAC OS. If people tried it, and it got some support from developers, Linux would begin to dominate.

Plus, I dislike the $150 extra tossed onto the price of PC's just for Windows 8.

I'm not taking that bet. I've read a few stories from Linux users who have been asked, when someone sees their computer screen, "what version of Mac OS X is that?"

As for Micro$oft, I dislike them not because they're a big company (if that were the sole reason, I'd loathe Apple, too), but because of their monopolistic business practice. They release shoddy software (Windows operating system) and hardware (how long did Xbox users have to deal with the red ring of death?) and they don't really care to fix the problems quickly (or before they're released) because the customer base doesn't really have any other place to go. (Well, they do, but Joe Public tends to shy away from the other two options because they don't think they'll understand Linux and/or Mac systems are too expensive.)

The thing is, I hate using OSX. And monopolistic? Shoddy software? I dunno man, I love Windows 7. Not 8, but 7, yeah. Say what you will, but making everyone buy Apple products compatible with your Apple computer isn't very friendly either. That doesn't apply so much to Linux, butI also have not the time to set that up on my computer.

I am not saying Linux is bad--my friends who use it (mostly) love it. Heck, I probably hate Apple more than anyone. I am just arguing that Linux as a--what, company? Who develops Linux? Anyway, they'd have to get a lot more competitive to be top dog and fight dirty like the other guys. I'm not saying that Linux AS AN OS has to change.



My point is that in industries this huge, friendly and free finds it hard to compete with meanie-pants corporations with endless financial resources.

Soup, it isn't that I missed your point, just that it wasn't very pointy. You could pop a water balloon with it, but it wouldn't work as an ice pick, or to remove a splinter.

Also, the people who develop Linux distros are groups of hardcore nerds who may receive some little money in return for their efforts. And/or, tiny teams of gremlins and elves who come out at night and make magics in a command line.

Fact is, friendly and free works great, especially in the current economic waftings and computorial knowledges. Large greedy companies strive to the point of exhaustion trying to portray their product and practices as "friendly and free". That version of Linux you keep saying doesn't exist is what I'm using as an OS now. It just, at the risk of repeating myself, needs more advertising and a divestation of the nerdcore flavonoids. The fact that Steam is now running on Linux seems to suggest it is getting more popular, and incidentally, puts a crack in the "You must have Windows to play games" wall.

Linux ain't perfect, but I firmly believe all it needs is a street crew and some T-shirts to become more mainstream. *shrugs* Also, people to stop buying everything with a little "i" in front of it. But it wouldn't have to fight dirty or get competitive. It already beats M$ and Mac in my eyes since it rarely fails and costs nothing.
