I liked that little display that plugged into the controllers of the Dreamcast. If I remember they were memory cards too. They had neat little pictures and messages. Sure it was crude was todays standards but they were still pretty cool. I could see that being called a standard. It was innovative for the time.

If we want to talk innovation I always like the Turboduo. NEC had those credit card sized game cartridges, and were the first console to introduce CD gaming. Plus they offered owners of the Turbografx-16 an amazing deal - send in your console and like 95 bucks (something like that) to upgrade to the Turboduo. They had the best RPG's of that era, they had Bonk. I miss Bonk. I miss NEC.

As a Sony consumer who doesn't have a lot of money and is fairly new to HD gaming, I feel like the PS3 has quite a bit of life in it yet. However, it'd be foolish for them to keep placing all their eggs in that basket. Excited to drool over what the PS4 has to offer.

Also, wasn't the Dreamcast purpoted to have better graphics capability than both the PS1 and the N64? And wasn't it supposed to have some sort of internet gaming capacity? I've only played the Dreamcast like, once, but it's a shame that Sega had to stop making consoles because of it.

By that standard, other Sega systems had limited internet capabilities (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Meganet; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_NetLink), as did the N64DD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_64DD), which had additional limited internet capabilities.

The Dreamcast could be argued as one of the first popular disc-based systems, but that's outpaced by Sega's own SegaCD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_cd), and the Sega Saturn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_saturn). (And let's not forget the 3DO: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3DO_Intera ... ultiplayer, but that was hardly "popular").

I would agree with FFG that the VMU was really innovative, but its innovation wasn't used in any major way until, arguably, the Wii U.

Hmm, interesting stuff, I really didn't know any of that.

I bought my PS3 around a month ago, primarily so that I could play The Last of Us, but plenty of other games as well. I would've gone for the 360 if not for the fact that The Last of Us is a PS3 exclusive and, you know, the fact that my 360 died on me and I've had the most unsavory experience with Microsoft imaginable.

I don't regret it. I've had a lot of fun with it and it was relatively affordable at $300, Uncharted 3 included (and the Dust beta thing but that game is completely beyond me). I'll continue to have fun with it, considering that there are many games (exclusive and non-exclusive) that I haven't touched yet, and there should still be some new releases for a while yet. I waited seven years to get it and it's not particularly what I would call "outdated." I'll get the PS4 at some point, but with the PS3 I can wait for it to go down in price. We aren't slaves to new tech; get the most out of what you have now and when the time is right, upgrade. Pacing yourself will save a ton of cash, I've found.

Well, in any case.

The PS3 has had a long run. And sooner or later that system will be obsolete, just as the ones before it are long forgotten.

Locked away in the prison of time, collecting dust, dirt and grime as it remains nothing more than a memory..........actually, you buy an old-school system on Amazon or eBay. But you get my point, right?
