"Waiting..." It was disappointing.

Against my better judgement I went to the remake of The Pink Panther yesterday. (Though the fact that my cable/internet was out most of the day was probably partly to blame for my lack of sound reasoning.) Anyway, the movie is a complete load; don't waste your time on it. The original Pink Panther starring Peter Sellers, David Niven, Claudia Cardinale, Robert Wager, et. al. is one of my favorite movies of all time, beautifully directed by Blake Edwards and with one of the greatest scores in movie history by Henry Mancini. The remake is just nothing but unabahsed mass-market tripe. (Though they carried over a portion of the original's soundtrack, thankfully.)

Seriously, someone should lock Steve Martin in a basement somewhere so he can no longer desecrate classic movies. He was extremely funny 20 years ago when he was making movies like The Jerk and LA Story, but lately he's been churning out steaming pile after steaming pile that is neither original, funny, or even the slightest bit entertaining. (They are hugely successful at the box office, though, giving you a good gauge on the intelligence level of the typical American movie goer.)

If you want to see a Pink Panther movie, stay home and rent either the original or its first sequel A Shot in the Dark. Marvel at the genius comedic timing of Niven, Sellers, Wagner, and Herbert Lom. Marvel at the beatiful scores penned by Mancini. Study the simpe, straight-forward way in which Edwards frames the gags. Above all, try and forget how truly awful most movies are nowadays.

It wasn't terrible, but again we're talking about a Movie Martin did 19 years ago. The only movie he's been in in the last decade that was even remotely funny was Bowfinger, and even that one's a stretch.

Also, now that I've reread my review of TPP I think I may have been a bit too harsh. As modern movies go it was actually pretty average. I'm still angry I wasted money to go see it, but it's really no worse than a lot of other recent movies I've been to. It's just sad to see the movie industry is so devoid of creativity that the best it can do is churn out half-***ed remakes of classic movies or special-effects driven adaptations of children's books first published half a century ago.

Mostly I'm just disappointed that Martin wasn't wise enough to know that there was no way he could come close to filling Sellers' shoes. Mike Myers was originally slated to play Clouseau, but he pulled out after he realized that he wasn't going to be able to get out of the shadow of the greatest comedic actor in film history. (If anyone here hasn't seen Dr. Strangelove yet, go rent and watch it. Right now.)

No, they really weren't. (Father of the Bride, at least; I've never seen Cheaper by the Dozen but judging by Martin's recent performances and Levy's complete incompetence in directing his most recent movie I'd wager dollars to doughnuts that CbtD was terrible, too.) Just my opinion, of course, and as you probably can tell by now I tend to have higher standards when it comes to entertainment value.

The new Cheaper by the dozen is the st00pidest! It and it's sequal are almost like birth-control promotionals or something... the crude humor and stupidness is almost more than I can bear....

Yeah, and even in Bowfinger he was overshadowed by Eddie Murphy, who was much funnier IMHO.

I watched the Corpse Bride tonight. Pretty good flick; I liked it better than Nightmare Before Christmas (which I thnk is overrated). Danny Elfman's musical scores added a lot to the movie.

I watched Akira last night. (Finally! I've wanted to see it for years.) Very good movie, but the ending was a bit questionable by a theological point of view.

Yikes. It's just Resident Evil on Mars with big guns and ripped soldiers. "Oh no my gunlight went out! And I'm in the darkest corner of the facility! And there are seven eyes looking at me through the darkness..." Terrible stuff.

yes DOOM was horrible... and disgusting...But around the ending it was good

I haven't seen Doom, but I'll guarantee you it's better than Bloodrayne. Bloodrayne is the kind of movie that makes most of the movies on Mystery Science Theater 3000 look good. And that's no exaggeration... it really is that bad.
