Oh gosh. If someone attacks you you have the right to defend yourself, no matter what their age, gender, nationality, or soda preferences.

You said, "if you can't avoid it, just walk away", which would be ... avoiding it!

Also, if the situation has escalated to the point where they may or may not be threatening you with a knife, that calls for firearms and smoke grenades, not a freaking punch.
