There is only one God, but He consists of three distinct persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The word “trinity” is not found in Scripture. It is a word used by Christians to express the doctrine of the unity of God as consisting of three distinct Persons. This word is derived from the Greek word trias, first used by Theophilus (A.D. 168-183), or from the Latin trinitas, first used by Tertullian (A.D. 220), to express this doctrine.
The propositions involved in the doctrine are these:
That God is one, and that there is but one God (Deut. 6:4; 1 Kings 8:60; Isa. 44:6; Mark 12:29, 32; John 10:30).
That the Father is a distinct divine Person (hypostasis, subsistentia, persona, suppositum intellectuale), distinct from the Son and the Holy Spirit.
That Jesus Christ was truly God, and yet was a Person distinct from the Father and the Holy Spirit. (John 20:30-31)
That the Holy Spirit is also a distinct divine Person.
Notice the use of the words “us” and “our” when the Son of God (“The Word”) created Man (Gen. 1:26).
Although equal in divinity, the Father is in a position of authority or hierarchy over Jesus Christ, incarnate Son of God (John 14:28, 13:16; 1 Cor. 11:3; Phil. 2:6-8).

Wait, didn't we already have a discussion thread about this a long time ago? Whatever happened to that?

I have not realized that there has already been discussion previously on the same topic. I am able to apologize if that is what you were going at, me being wrong for starting a discussion on it.

Everything above this sentence is opinion and worth precisely what was paid for it.
Everything below this sentence is indisputable fact as verified by scientists, philosophers, scholars, clergy, and David Bowie.

As far as I can tell, the opening post accurately describes what the Bible says about this topic. I can't claim to understand the Trinity, but then again, why would finite humans expect to understand the very nature of who an infinite God is?
Here's my best guess at how it works. It's probably totally wrong, so don't go taking it as gospel truth. Assume for a minute that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are 3 entities that all know everything. They know every fact, every atom, and every truth in the entire universe. They know what has happened at every moment in all of history, and they know what will happen at every moment for the rest of history. If you assume that they truly know everything, then this means they also know each others' thoughts. If God the Father thinks "I would prefer for Jesus to teach the crowds for another day," then Jesus could know that thought immediately.
Jesus could think to himself, "I plan to teach the crowds another day because the Father would want that," and immediately the Father would know that thought. Practically speaking, it would be as useful as telepathy, but it would apply to every thought. Jesus could think about any of the Father's thoughts that he chose, and know them.
I don't believe it to be entirely unreasonable that constant, absolute communication of one mind with another could lead to intertwining those minds. One mind could begin thinking about a topic, and another would come up with a course of action. Then the third mind could put it into action. It might be a bit like the times when identical twins seem to somehow know what the other is thinking, but on a much more extreme level. If that way of functioning was extreme enough, perhaps you could say that the three minds are functioning as one mind. Perhaps it wouldn't be stretching the truth to say that they literally are one mind, although they have distinct characteristics as well.
Of course as far as I know, God has always existed, and always will exist, so I don't believe he developed this state of existence over a period of time. As far as I know, he's always been the way he is now, with the Son speaking nothing of his own will, but only speaking what he has been given from the Father.
Well, like I said, these are all just wild guesses of mine. Don't take me too seriously, because I'm probably wrong about more than I know. If I offended any of you by the way I worded things, I apologize. I do sincerely believe that there is only one God, and I sincerely believe that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are three persons (if persons is the right term) with different roles, who communicate with each other.
