Speaking of Tarja, I'd rather listen to her solo work than Nightwish any day.
Also, Battlelore if you're a LOTR fan.

I'm definitely more of a fan of Tarja, but some of the newer stuff is ok. I just liked Tarja's voice better and I thought it made their style better as a whole.
edit: I forgot to mention that part of the reason is that Passion and the Opera, She is My Sin, The Kinslayer, Sleepwalker, and their rendition of Phantom of the Opera are my favorite songs by them, lol.

To touch back to the Christian Metal note, apparently there was a catholic priest in his late 60's who had his own heavy metal band for a while.
I can't dig metal too much out of a simple preference for punk, but Russkaja is definitely an exception. They've dubbed their style "Russian Turbo Polka Metal", and even more surprising than the name is the fact that it sounds half-decent. "Energia" is one of their better songs.

Gave Kaizers Orchestra a try, specifically Hjerteknuser. I think we share a soft spot.ArchAngel wrote:Haha, I like it. I got a soft spot for gypsy/polka rock, ala Kaizers Orchestra.

I haven't listened to too much of their new stuff, mostly to their Ompa Til Du Dør album, so that was new to me. Thanks for posting.
My particular favorites are Bak et halleluja, Kontroll på kontinentet and Fra sjåfør til passasjer.

What about Floor Jansen? She's a fantastic replacement for Nightwish.RoosterOnAStick wrote:I'm definitely more of a fan of Tarja, but some of the newer stuff is ok. I just liked Tarja's voice better and I thought it made their style better as a whole.
Here:
I listen to pretty much any kind of Metal. I love Symphonic, Black, Death, Progressive, Power, and Industrial. I also listen too fusions of any of them.
I've been on a kick of Sabaton, Dimmu Borgir (Older stuff), Symphony X, Ayreon, and Within Temptation.

Somewhat of a tangent but still relevant. Here is some 8-bit metal that I found. Someone made a rendition of Amon Amarth's As Loke Falls.

Hey yo all,
long time metal fan reporting in. Since I come from Finland, I guess it's somewhat in my veins.
I've always had a tendency for heavy-heartedness and melancholy, to which I've found metal music suiting. I don't think the music brings me down, but instead helps me deal with feelings that would exist regardless.
I do sometimes question the lyrics in context of my faith. Most of the time I try to adapt the content that challenges me intellectually, helps me deal with my own thoughts, or just gives me a nice (usually an adrenaline rush induced) feeling. Sometimes however I think it goes way too far, for example I had mixed feelings about a black metal band I tend to like (Mustan Kuun Lapset, Children of the Dark Moon in Finnish) that had a song where lyrics described killing an infant. Like, I understand artistic freedom and intention of breaking boundaries, and that this does happen in the world, but I do not really see the overall point. An another issue is that I've noticed that sadly some bands either actively endorse or passive accept national socialism. Some bands that I really wanted to like have been associated with some shady movements, and made me clear steer of them even if the case is not clear.
Growing up I was a 'goth', partly inside partly on the outward appearance. I think in early 2000's my favorite band was Type O Negative - to the extent that even my blood type is 0-
. However, maturing since then has teached me on how to let music control my moods, thoughts and opinions - it's quite dependent on if you control the substances you consume, or the substances control you. It is sad to hear music-associated horrible acts, like school shooting videos with KMFDM music, which used to be one of my favorite bands. I think it's hypocricy to completely try ignore the association with the music and the themes with the acts, but it is most likely more of a symptom than a cause in my opinion. Nowadays I personally prefer high quality curiosities, like the band Carach Angren: strange symphonic black metal band, with good music and often depthful stories/lyrics that span entire albums. Oh, and really good live performances.
Anyhow, I thought I'd pitch in a few album/song suggestions of bands that you might not of heard of, but that I've found enjoyable:

I think we've mentioned Epica here, but here's the opening track(s) off of their newest album, The Quantum Enigma. It's pretty awesome.

I love metal, but I only listen to Christian metal because I don't know if my parents would let me listen to anything else.
