Beggars <--Thrice
I listened to most of the album before it came out via Thrice's MySpace, but now owning the digital copy I see how much I was missing out. This album.. is incredible. It's beautifully produced. Everything is perfectly mixed. The MySpace feed really didn't do it justice at all. And it's hard to believe they did it all themselves. In their home studio. Everything jells together and the whole deal is involved. The album art, the lyrics, the music.. all of it.
The lyrics is what really makes me love Beggars. This album just backs up my opinion of Dustin being one of the best lyricists around. He sings of man's depravity in "All The World Is Mad" (We are brimming with cumbersome, murderous greed and malevolence deep and profound. We do unspeakable deeds; Does our wickedness know any bounds?).. yet he also describes the hope found in Christ (I heard singing of a violent, tireless mystery: That one would give his life to save his enemy.) on "The Great Exchange".
Thrice is one of the few bands that I feel God speaks to me through. He did that through several songs on this record. "Circles" and "Beggars" specifically. "Circles" talks about wanting and pursuing for progress.. yet failing and ending up where you were previously. How many times have I promised God I wouldn't do something, but then end up doing it again? I've learned that you can't "set sail with no fixed star in sight" and you gotta consciously work at it with Christ.
In "Beggars" it speaks of everything being a gift ("Did you choose the place or the hour you’d be born? Tell me what can you claim? Not a thing — not your name! Tell me if you can recall just one thing, That’s not a gift in this life?") That's hard to swallow. You want things.. and you have a slight expectation to get those things. Yet God has no obligation to give us what we ask. We should rely on Him and His will for us and not what we want or what we think is best for us. And with that in mind.. I've had a very different outlook on life.
Musically the album is just as strong. Long gone are the sounds of "Identity Crisis" and "Illusion of Safety". This album is much more groove-orientated. The rhythm section (bass and drums) have really stepped up their game on this record. With songs like "All The World Is Mad" and "Doublespeak" the bass really adds a new dimension to the songs and I don't think they would be as good without the bass being as profound as it is. The drums are solid as always, but somehow they've gotten better. On songs like "Doublespeak" and "The Weight" the drums just add that little something that pushes the songs from "good" to "awesome". Not to be shown up, Dustin and Teppei have really written some incredible guitar work. From beginning to end they show how they have mastered the art of conveying emotions through the guitar.
I'll stop talking now. I'm in a writing mood today so, sorry for the length. This is definitely my album of the year. Hands down. Even if you don't like Thrice, I strongly recommend you give this a listen.
Highlights: "In Exile", "The Weight", "Beggars", "Doublespeak"
A+

Ohno, appreciate the Beggars review. I love Thrice and own everything up to their most recent release. I'll definitely be picking it up in the near future.
Recently, I have gotten the following:
"Armistice" <--- MuteMath
"Consumed" <--- Jesus Culture
"Cannons" <--- Phil Wickham
All are excellent, but MM and JC are my favorites of the three.
MuteMath's newest isn't as good as their debut album, but it's still very, very good.

"brand new eyes" <-- Paramore
Yeah, I pretty much love this album. Been listening to it a lot via MySpace feed, and I got the album today. It's a whole lot better than Riot!. A lot more mature too, which is what I always wanted from them.

Great album. I'm not sure if I like it more than Riot! just yet, but I've only listened to it once so far, and I listened to Riot! I don't know how many times. They definitely have matured, both musically and lyrically. Overall, I very happy with this album... and it makes me confident that Paramore will continue to release awesome music for years to come.

Black Gives Way To Blue - Alice in Chains
It's pretty good, but I need to get used to the new singer's voice. Oh, and also, I'm not sure that it has the staying power of their previous three albums, particularly the first two.
Dethalbum II Deluxe Edition - Dethklok
Hilarious, awesome, solid.

You were telling him about Buddha, you were telling him about Mohammed in the same breath. You never mentioned one time the Man who came and died a criminal’s death...
