So I figure that I would post this. For a game to be retro, it HAS to be older then then a PS1-generation game at the very least.

Top ten retro games, that where made before the PS1...
Ok, here I go.

Note that this list is not in any kind of order. (it would a hard task to rank them.)

1. Chrono Trigger
2. Super Mario Bros. 3
3. Final Fantasy 6
4. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
6. The Legend of Zelda
7. Zelda II
8. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
9. Kirby's Adventure
10. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

And several others that are escaping my mind at the moment.
(Which is probably a good thing, otherwise this list would have taken much longer to make. XD)

Though yes, the retro Zelda games have always been a favorite of mine.

For those of us who don't judge games by console (the true gamers, all hail the pc), would it be reasonable to say 1995 and before?

My top 10:
  • 1. Star Control 2 (1992)
    2. Sonic 2 (1992)
    3. Master of Orion (1993)
    4. Wing Commander I (1990)
    5. Wing Commander II (1991)
    6. Combat Cars (1994)
    7. Commander Keen 4 (1991)
    8. Star Strike (1981. Intellivision, baby!)
    9. Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory: So You Want to Be a Hero (1989-1992)
    10. Rebel Assault (1993)
Needless to say, the early nineties was a good time for gaming for me.

I would have included Master of Orion 2 at the top, but it's '96. Civ II would have also made it, but I swore it was out earlier than 96...

Using Arch's standard of anything before 1995, here's my list:

1. Commander Keen 1: Marooned on Mars (Keen 2-6 are fantastic but this was the first)

2. Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Sonic 1,2,CD are good too but not having a Sega Genesis in my youth, the Sonic fanboy in me only had Sonic & Knuckles collection to play on the PC...so it was my first Sonic game, and it was awesome)

3. SimCity 2000

EDIT:
4. Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time (didn't even think of this one and my new 5th entry entry until I saw Corpfox's list....the first Journeyman Project is cool too, but the 2nd just had this sci-fi novel feel that sucked you in, with nice plot twists)

5. Myst (how could I forget Myst? though if I want to play through Myst's storyline, I prefer to play realMyst, which is much better to look at and immersive)

6. Crystal Caves (and its cousin Secret Agent...but Caves just had that funky sci-fi feel to it)

7. Duke Nukem 1 (Duke Nukem II was a good game as well....before Duke became a major pervert)

8. Mario Bros. 3 ( not being a huge Mario fan and I need to have more console games on my list....this is my favorite retro Mario game )

9. Chip's Challenge (my family had Windows 3.1 in my youth...so yeah we had the Windows Entertainment Pack)

10. Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon (I loved Humongous Entertainment's titles in general, because rather than get you to learn by shoving numbers and reading down your throat, they required you to think and introduced kids to quality adventure titles...and this game in general had cool atmosphere and was my first true entry to the HE games)

Honorable mentions:

11. Mickey's Follow The Reader (don't normally include conventional learning games, but this was pretty cool in its own right and its graphics were great)

12. Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure

I'll also look at 1995 and earlier games, and try to limit myself to games I've actually played. :)

In no particular order....

1. Street Fighter II

2. Star Raiders I spent many many hours playing this on the Atari 5200. :)

3. Super Mario World

4. Ultima IV

5. Galaxian

6. The Bard's Tale The original version.

7. Mega Man X

8. Super Metroid (I can't believe I almost forgot about this one...).

9. Breakout A game that has been duplicated many, many times over the past few decades, this is another game that I've played originally on the Atari 5200.

10. ELIZA When I was learning how to program in BASIC, this was one of the most complicated ones in my training book. I still have a bit of nostalgia for this silly little computer therapist....

Sstavix, your mention of Star Raiders reminded me of EGA Trek. Basically a game that inspired a game I made myself. So maybe it'd be my #11.

Not in any particular order:

1) Starfox 64 (not technically pre-PS1, but it's '94-95, so I feel OK)
2) Chrono Trigger
3) Megaman X
4) Super Metroid
5) Castlevania (NES classic; the modern ones are fun, but don't hold a candle)
6) Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine (Sonic offshoot puzzler...rather hard to find a comparison actually.)
7) Sonic the Hedgehog
8) Super Mario Bros 3
9) Super Mario World (which, I have to admit, is and likely always will be my favorite 2D Mario. It's still an unconquered platformer, in my opinion)
10) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (which really, it probably one of my top Zelda games)

I've been playing a lot of "retro" titles recently. XD
