what causes an overcast night sky to just glow a dull red?

reflecting on the snow...it's just eerie.

Scientists wouldn't understand this, and would laughably try to come up with a theory based on air pollution tied back to George Bush.

It's neither pollution nor ambient city light. All that's around me is a lake and a couple cabins, nearest city of any size is a good 100 miles.

Pretty sure it has something to do with the way the light bends coming through atmosphere.

But in reality, I'm totally just guessing.

Actually, it's the sun refracting off the atmosphere. Sounds weird, right?
