I just found out about this a few days ago-- very sad, though honestly seeing him lately I think it was kinda his time.

(FYI I am normally more "plugged in" than this, but from a week after Election Day to a little after New Years' every year I basically black out all political news. I don't want it to ruin my holiday season. It's my "break".)
