Do you have the PC version? It's a pretty difficult game but not to the point where it's too frustrating, at least that was my opinion. Unless you actually want to rescue every single Mudokon, because some in the secret areas are insanely hard to rescue.
Abe's Exoddus (for the PC) is ten times easier because you can quicksave anywhere.
