No worries. :)

So, Sega has not released any Sonic games lately. Anybody besides me think they're planning something big? And not just for Sonic games. It doesn't even have to be a Dreamcast 2. Just do you think they're planning something? Anything?

Didn't they just release a new racing game?

Probably a new Sonic game.

Well a game normally does take around one to two years to be made.

So it can really be anything.
I guess we will find out when the E3 starts.
(Or who knows, maybe before then.)

Well, what would you want it to be?

Something original. I'm not saying Sonic is bad or anything, but they have got to start using some new material. It's always the same old thing: Dr. Eggman wants to take over the world, Sonic has to stop him, Eggman releases some sort of "not-so-secret weapon", and then Sonic saves the day by obtaining the Chaos Emeralds and going all super. They need to add something new. Maybe Eggman turns out to have a boss of his own, who fires him and decides to take over the world himself or something like that.

Actually, the more recent games have been mixing things up. In Sonic Adventure 2, they not only let you play the bad guys but also made the government a bigger obstacle than Robotnik (you fought much more government robots than badniks) and in the end, Sonic, Robotnik and company end up all working together against the creations of Robotnik's grandfather. Also in Sonic Heroes, it was revealed that Metal Sonic was the true villain who shaped shifted into Robotnik, while the real Robotnik was locked in a room. Lastly, Sonic Adventure had Chaos, a creature that was summoned by Robotnik, which turns against him in the end, which has pretty much been a trend: Unleashed had Gaia (the creature Robotnik was trying to awaken) be the final boss and Sonic Generations had you fight the "time beast" in the end. Sonic Colors might be the only recent exception of having Sonic and Robotnik fight in the final battle.

So in the end, what good did this "mixing things up" do? Making Robotnik a softy that helped out Sonic in SA2 really trivialized why Robotnik had been so evil in the first place. And the Archie Sonic comics actually literally killed off Robotnik, so for the next twenty issues they kept trying to pull out minor villain after minor villain. Until finally they brought back Robotnik from an alternate universe. Which is a statement of how well the relationship between the two characters work. I think this trend that Sonic Adventure started of "Robotnik unleashes an ancient creature that ends up turning on him in the end" also diminishes the classic struggle between Sonic and Robotnik. They're really philosophical compliments. Much like Batman and Joker. So I kind of wish they'd return to having Robotnik be the final boss and main baddie.

I want more of the same ole, same ole. Just told in new ways.

Thing is, there are plenty of Sonic games that did something new (didn't you read my review for Sonic and the Black Knight?), but a lot of people didn't like them and most still don't like them.

Saying it didn't feel like the real Sonic.

I really wish people would stop asking for flying cars.

They want something new to be added while maintaining quality. It's been hard for Sega to do both

I think Sonic Generations is the best example of what Sega has done right with Sonic in recent years. They took the best of Sonic Unleashed, which are the daytime levels and focused on that gameplay for Sonic Colors and removed the quick time events. But with Colors they also threw in gimmicky levels. So with Generations, the gimmicks were only in the side levels, and there were no quick time events. They also took the criticism of Sonic 4 and revamped their side scrolling engine for Sonic Generations. Its really culmination of the games that came before it and they learned from their mistakes.
