I've been a huge Sonic fan since I first played Sonic 1 in 1991. I was 7 years old, an avid NES kid first playing the Sega. Now I was not one of those "more bits=better game" kids, as I still liked the games that were on their way out; Mario, Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man etc.

I was blown away by the speed of a blue hedgehog, jumping on robots and fighting the evil Dr. Robotnik... yes I said that. Eggman=lame, not real name. (Japanese name, I know.. but Robotnik is so menacing!).. I loved the gameplay, the story and the graphics. So you know I was exited for every forthcoming game, until 3D Blast and Sonic games forever tanked until Generations redeemed the franchise last year. Sonic's transition into 3D was dismal to say the least. Crappy game after crappy game, from Sonic Adventure Battle to Sonic Heroes to *shudder* the werewolf one. Maybe it's the nostalgic gamer in me, but he's better suited to 2D platforming. Generations gave a good combo of both, making it the "Mario 64" of the Sonic franchise.

Now, my favourite of them all is Sonic 2. I played this game until it stopped working in my Genesis. It was the epitome of my childhood. Sonic & Knuckles is a very close second, mostly based on its capability with 2&3 and wide storyline between 2 games, and of course BEING Knuckles which was my dream since playing 3. Sonic 4 for XBL/PSN/Wii are also great throwbacks, but lack the same simple yet great control the older games had.

I was also a fan of Sonic Sat AM show (NOT the "Adventures of Sonic" one.. was too goofy, kiddy and overall poorly written. I mean the one with Princess Sally, Tails, Rotor, that robot bunny)... the show became an instant classic that ended far too soon. AND on a cliffhanger. Really? *sigh* that hurt my childhood.... whew! Nerd moments galore.

Great post from another Sonic fan! :)

I find your take on Sonic's 3D games interesting. You mentioned that you felt Sonic Unleashed was bad, yet you also mentioned that Sonic Generations returned the series back into redemption. However it was Sonic Unleashed that defined the modern gameplay in Generations (modern Sonic plays nearly identically to the Daytime Stages in Unleashed...with some minor improvements, like removing the quick-time events for alternative paths).

Considering that both games have two main types of gameplay, one of which is shared by both games-- do you feel that it was the Werehog that ruined Unleashed? Or do you feel that the daytime stage \ modern gameplay was faulty and that the classic Sonic gameplay in Generations is the only redeeming quality?

Also, I noticed you didn't mention Sonic Colors. Where do you feel it stands in terms of quality?

Hopefully these questions aren't sounding like to be "gotcha" kind of questions. I do have an honest interest on your take.

Preach it, brother. Sonic 2 is probably the greatest platformer of all time.

And if you think Sonic Unleashed was bad, try playing Sonic and the Black Knight.

Well, I've never played Sonic Colours. Heard mixed reviews but I might pick it up if I see it at EB Games cheap. As for Generations, I just feel that it made the series better.

The other 3D series, although most with good concepts do not cut it in game play quality although the Dreamcast one was great. I think it was Sonic 2006 where the speed was cut down and you could walk..on a loop de loop.. not cool.

I played through about half of Sonic Heroes and mercifully did not finish. Ditto for Adventure Battle, which is shockingly popular. Heroes had moments where I played as Tails and Knuckles. Not bad, then there was the Chaotix characters. The alligator, the bee, that rhino/armadillo thing... no. Just no.

The werehog, interesting idea but I'd rather have the option/mandatory part of quest to turn into a wolf. Much like Link in Twilight Princess (well, after gathering those tears and you can turn into a wolf at will lol)

Sonic Colors was... eh. Not as bad as some, but not very good. Generations is the only non-genesis Sonic game I'd say I liked.

Too late, bro. :|

Anyway (ignoring Arch's comment)......

Exactly.

And people are still, in my opinion, one-track minded when it comes to Sonic games. Think of it this way:

SEGA already has enough problems dealing with people what they got when it comes to Sonic games. Would you rather they not make any at all? If they we're too afraid to make Sonic games for any systems/multiple platforms, a lot of fans would be disappointed. Moreover, try to understand how hard it is for SEGa to give new perspectives of Sonic for new game systems, while keeping that same quality he's known for. To say that SEGA isnt trying would be downright selfish and unappreciative.

Sega is re-releasing Sonic the Fighters on Playstation Network and Xbox Live. This time with a character that was left out of the game called "Honey" (unless you hacked it) and now you can unlock Robotnik and Metal Sonic. Online gameplay is also announced.

So if none if you have played this game before, you can finally see what it would be like if Sonic and Tails beat the fur out of each other.

What? Did you want a serious post about a mediocre Sonic fighting game? :P

(I actually have played it on the GameCube.)

SONIC IS STRAIGHT UP OWNING RIGHT NOW. Little BIG Planet is going to have a competitor pretty soon.
