Server OPeratives - The future of OPs in Minecraft

Postby Cantore » Tue Nov 01, 2011 7:02 pm

I've created a poll for this thread because I realized just today that my being an OP may make other people who've been here longer a little ruffled under the feathers. During the time of the creation of Jerusalem, I was made an Operative by ccgr. I could have taken this power with access to the server itself, but I did not. I wanted to show respect to all of you who now possess this honor.

That being said, I thought about this today, and realized that there are some people on here that probably don't have OP, but think that they should have it for whatever reasons.

So, I propose we take a closer look at what an OP is to this server; what he/she represents to us as a server; and come to a conclusion as to who should and should not have OP. Having just made this statement, I am more than willing to step down if you all wish it, or if my being an OP is not in line with the protocols of being one.

So, here's a little list as to the characteristics of a proposed OP that I would like to see as a player.

1) This is a Christian Server ("Christ Centered Gamer"). This proposed OP would have to be a Christian AND behave as one with wisdom, respect, and love.

2) This proposed OP would have to be one who always attempts to do what is best for the server, at times even if feelings are hurt by doing so. This usually comes into play with powers such as the use of commands, Creative, and the giving of the OP title itself.

3) The Operative should be a well-known and well-liked individual, and a regular player on the server. If I am gone for a month or longer, I should not remain an OP when I return, until I am playing regularly for another month at least.

4) An Operative should not stifle, but encourage creativity within the server. He/she should also keep order with the locations of theme structures, however.

5) Operatives do not argue, get angry, and quickly use their given command abilities for selfish reasons. Their 'yes' is well-thought and deliberate, and their 'no' means 'sorry, but no'. If there is a situation that may need a group decision, the Operative will use wisdom and post that concern/idea/problem on this forum for other OPs/players to help come to a conclusion/decision on the matter at hand.

6) The Operative is voted upon by other Operatives to obtain this position after interest for the position is known and requested within this forum, and the player has a proven record of being a responsible person suited for the task.

That's all I can think of. I encourage your response and feed-back to this topic, as usual. Let's see if more needs to be added to this list, or taken away.

I trusted you enough to have vnc access to the server and to edit our world (I backed it up beforehand). You're respectful and knowledgeable and on the server often enough. No one else has been interested or been able to vnc into the server so it takes a load off my shoulders to know that someone other than me can restart the server (provided the network card is enabled.) ;)

I vote you stay and that the ops approve new ops from here on forward. I agree with your guidelines and find them reasonable.

I only know people from the forum as I rarely log onto the server for reasons other than testing connectivity or checking out creativity.

I know I haven't been able to be on the server on a consistent basis. Would you guys have me step down? I'd rather not as I like to check and make sure everything is going fine when I do log in.

I take it you're referring to the structure and seriousness with which I've posted this thread?

To that I'll respond:
Minecraft servers are consistantly targeted (and specifically Christian servers) by griefers. With the growth in numbers that I foresee (and have already begun to see), there needs to be clear organization, and clear direction with respect to the map, clear representation of a Christian server, and the in-game commands given out. Something griefed within Minecraft could cost the entire server (all of its players) 1 full week of lost time and effort. This has happened in the past. Therefore, just as there is now safeguards for that, there also needs to be safeguards for the type of people set in charge of the server and its course.

You are correct - It is a game. But it is not correct to assume that project/efforts should go un-protected and unorganized.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Hmm.. if that rule needs to be taken out or adjusted, I can do so. I guess I was concerned with new players suddenly finding an OP on the server that they've never seen or heard of in the month that they've been playing. Does that make sense? I guess we could resolve this issue with an OP list that is stickied in our forums. This way new-comers can see who these individuals are, but also later-on apply for Creative/OP within that thread as well. (We also need an Introduction Thread that is stickied - for people to introduce themselves. I was looking for one when I joined, and just stumbled upon these threads.)

What if we had a locked sticky thread with a list of all our OPs? That way the newbies can look at that and know who the OPs are.

Makes sense. I think the list of OP's is a good idea.
