I've posted this before I think, but whatever. Anapestic tetrameter with occasional iambic and trochaic substitutions, rhyme scheme of ABABCC.
With glistening eyes awake and curse ye not the day
The current of the years wears constant against
The much torment'd soul yet it ebbs, held at bay
By the force of a man's heart. Stoic minds, though fenced
by virtue's calm and strength, can scarce be made to hold.
And a sinewy hand lacks the might, though bold
Sleep with broken dreams, and wake to see the man whom,
in mortal folly, broke them, gazing from behind
the silvered glass. But gaze back, deny him his tomb
And treasure the slow fading fragments you unbind
So wake – yes, wake – to live with no dreams in a world
of wand'ring dreamers, lost, and through the cosmos hurled
Remain unconquered, then, a new day to seize
So grasp with tortured hands at what you never
reach. And see all things lost, as the omen decrees
For though you toil and strain you will weep, forever
As the wind has no end, nor a source, yet gusts on
So also your obdurate heart, until gone
Though the very fires of hell reach for you, defy
And let them warm your back as you surpass that den
So through the smoke, bid your ghosts good-bye
Those words left unspoken, those feelings forgotten
Bid them farewell, as you cross that dearest bliss
The Lethe serene, forgetful, the bitterest kiss
Rise anew, as a phoenix by passion made dust
And keep rising, not fearing what height may bring
With the lost, learn to soar, on shattered wings if must
Shy not from the pain, instead embrace it, mocking
Finally, search your broken mind, rule again, whole
But knowing that no king rules long, nor his soul
Breathing and blinking. You're doing both manually now
Knees bent again, I try pleading for mercy, though none is show, here in hell.
Dead amid living souls, reigning a begger, I surrender
