I was very surprised at this years E3. I wasn't too crazy about Sony and Microsoft's conferences, and I didn't think the Nintendo one would be any better. I was shocked at the new console, Wii U.
I had heard about a new console that "used a touch-screen tablet" previously. Honestly, I wasn't too thrilled. But when I saw the HD graphics, touch capabilities, Wii remote compatibility, and the ability to play without the TV, I was amazed! The title seemed kind of strange at first, but is really just like the DSi. The unveiling of this new console easily made the Nintendo conference the best of E3!
The Wii U is supposed to come out 2012, hopefully early. I'm hoping that the console will be cheap like the Wii, because systems like the Playstation 3 are awesome, but aren't that affordable.

Zelda HD looks fantastic! But i still fear nintendo's love of gimmicky tech. I am also confused by some reports that you can only use one Wii U controller at a time, that doesn't sound very fun if you have three other people over. It's also interesting to note that the PS Vita could possibly function the same way with the PS3 as the Wii U's tablet. Except with a smaller screen. I am also hoping for a similar price point as the Wii but i would be surprised if it was under $299.

I'm still not sure about the WiiU controller myself. While the concept and tech are interesting, will such a large device really be comfortable to hold for an hour, or two or five. The fact that it can use the Wii controllers is certainly a good idea, and I'm guessing that most local, multi-player games will uses them instead of the screens. Though I think it would be a shame to not be able to us multiple WiiU controllers, as the screens really do have a lot of potential for just that situation.
There's also the issue of graphics. Yes, it is HD. But the GPU used is not as powerful as either the XBox or the PS3 (reports indicate that is uses a last generation chip). So they can run current gen third party games, but what about the next generation? Unless developers decide that they don't want to push visuals any further (which would be bad news for the hardware manufactures) we'll end up with the same situation we had with the Wii vs Xbox360 and PS3. So, I can't really see the WiiU having all that long a life span.
